The Last Airbender

Ah! Ah! I'm not fond of M. Night Shyamalan since the whole Lady in the Water deal ('I'M A BRILLIANT CINEAST AND MY ART IS GOING TO CHANGE THE WORLD, CRITICS ARE STUPID AND DON'T UNDERSTAND MY VISION ANYWAY'). The race fail surrounding the casting of The Last Airbender didn't do much to change my mind. That's why I'm not unhappy to read the pretty unanimous (so far) responses to the movie.

Skip Beat

I don't know how it happened. I had not watched an anime for about 10 years. But I think I like Skip Beat!. It's cute and funny, the episodes are short and available in streaming. At first, it was just a nice afternoon break to forget about the pain in the ass that my clients are. But now I'm eager for season 2. In addition, the main female character is wonderful.

A Glorious dawn

How come I become so emotional watching this video?

"Fan communities have the potential for an extraordinary amount of subversion.

[...]

Any act of participation in the creation and deconstruction of the show can be a radical act. By cosplaying, by writing or reading fan fic, by blogging about the (good and bad) choices made by the writers, a fan asserts her importance, her active consumption and interaction with the material. She is not a passive consumer, forced to accept the narratives and values given to her, but a creator and a critic.

All of which is not to say that it isn’t important for sci fi shows to get their collective acts together, and start portraying the experiences and narratives of people who aren’t white dudes. But a fan who loves these shows doesn’t necessarily need to feel guilty about loving them, because she can subvert their weaknesses and actively participate in them."

So much THIS.

O.M.G. I've been listening non-stop to that "song" by Carl Sagan ever since I got it on vinyl thanks to Jack White, a few months ago. Yes, Jack White is as awesome as this "song" :D and I get weirdly emotional over it as well.

Awww. Yes, he has very good taste, indeed ;) And I'm glad to see I'm not the only one. I think it's powerfully poetic.

Haven't seen Airbender but I read articles that seriously don't make me want to.

Great Stoker quote, I heard about her very late (only this year in fact), through an article describing a female feminist blogger's experience with the Doctor Who fandom on mainstream (read male-dominated) forums. It was absolutely appalling. I can't find the link right now but I mostly evolve in places where I feel safe (read: LJ and Dreamwidth, which are full of women subverting canon and deconstructing everything) and it showed me just how weird it is outside of these safe spaces. DNW.

Exactly. But I'm more and more curious about the original cartoon. Too much series to watch!

I'm into video games and tried to actively participate in a French forum a few months ago... It was a frustrating experience. You know what they say about picking your fights? Well, I should have listened to this piece of advice because some people live in different dimensions than me. There is no other explanation.

If you find the link again, I'd be happy to read that article.

Well actually it was an article written by Courtney herself. It's here: http://austintotamu.blogspot.com/2010/03/science-fiction-geek-culture-and-sexism.html I'm not much into sci fi and even though I know of Doctor Who, I'm definitely not a fan but it was still terrible to read (and sadly, not that surprising either).
