Hello, people. Hopefully you're all fine and well (or at least not too stressed out by the holidays: it sure can be annoying). I'm quite busy these days. By totally unproductive things, such as watching movies, listening to new music and reading blogs on the Internet. Also family stuff. Also the girlfriend (lovely but a tad overwhelming for the nerdy person that I am).

But yeah for cream filled chocolate, mulled wine, salmon on buttered blini, no snow in sight and new video games!

La Fiesta des Suds is one of my favourite festivals in Marseille. It's always full of smiling people, positivity, social mixity, great food from every corners of the world. And obviously great "southern" music (in a very inclusive way : Nina Hagen did a gig in 2009).

I didn't find any youtube video about the Masilia Sound System guys unfortunatly. But Youssou N'Dour was AMAZING.

VALVe made a webcomic for promoting 'The Sacrifice', a Left 4 Dead DLC. I must confess that I may have cried just a little bit.

I don't even know who Christine O'Donnell is (for some rasons, I try to maintain a better knowledge of French politicians than American ones), but I did laugh so hard. Jay Smooth, I love you.

Connecting with female characters in geek television

"[...] This is disturbing, and can be explained by the ways in which geeks feel more pressure to over-act hypermasculinity. Geek boys are often picked on or bullied in school for being beta males, and geek men usually continue to feel undervalued because of their perceived lack of “manliness.” Their reaction to this bullying is very often not to subvert the patriarchal masculinity standards that they fail to meet, but to overcompensate for this lack by participating more enthusiastically in misogynistic and homophobic behaviors and language. And women who exist in this culture, and want to be accepted by these geek men, will also often capitulate with misogyny as well, and show their credibility in part by refusing to connect with female characters in television."

So true. I'm glad I'm not into the Doctor Who fandom, I don't think I could take any River bashing without uselessly arguing for hours.

Powerful song. Janelle is so talented.

Last monday, I went to a symposium titled "Bodies, identities... and after?". It took place in the framework of the UEEH (Universités d'Été Euroméditerranéennes des Homosexualités), an annual LGBTQI meeting which brings together people from mediterranean countries.

It was great. I laughed. I learnt a lot. Everyone was friendly. There was free coffee. And it was nice being surrounded by clever people knowing what the feminism movement stands for. Can't wait for next year.

And now for something completely different :

I'm very excited about this flick. I didn't like Death Proof that much (admittedly Tarantino annoys me more and more each year), but Planet Terror was my favourite guilty pleasure of 2007. I'm obviously very pleased with the casting : Michelle Rodriguez + Danni Trejo + Frank Lapidus Jeff Fahey + Robert de Niro.

I know that the Rodriguez/Tarantino's films are hardly low budget and that some fans are rightfully bitter when they get compared with REAL (less costly) b movies. But still, it looks great.

And because I'm a creep, here the best parts of the video if you feel too lazy to click on it.

The Last Airbender

Ah! Ah! I'm not fond of M. Night Shyamalan since the whole Lady in the Water deal ('I'M A BRILLIANT CINEAST AND MY ART IS GOING TO CHANGE THE WORLD, CRITICS ARE STUPID AND DON'T UNDERSTAND MY VISION ANYWAY'). The race fail surrounding the casting of The Last Airbender didn't do much to change my mind. That's why I'm not unhappy to read the pretty unanimous (so far) responses to the movie.

Skip Beat

I don't know how it happened. I had not watched an anime for about 10 years. But I think I like Skip Beat!. It's cute and funny, the episodes are short and available in streaming. At first, it was just a nice afternoon break to forget about the pain in the ass that my clients are. But now I'm eager for season 2. In addition, the main female character is wonderful.

A Glorious dawn

How come I become so emotional watching this video?

"Fan communities have the potential for an extraordinary amount of subversion.

[...]

Any act of participation in the creation and deconstruction of the show can be a radical act. By cosplaying, by writing or reading fan fic, by blogging about the (good and bad) choices made by the writers, a fan asserts her importance, her active consumption and interaction with the material. She is not a passive consumer, forced to accept the narratives and values given to her, but a creator and a critic.

All of which is not to say that it isn’t important for sci fi shows to get their collective acts together, and start portraying the experiences and narratives of people who aren’t white dudes. But a fan who loves these shows doesn’t necessarily need to feel guilty about loving them, because she can subvert their weaknesses and actively participate in them."

So much THIS.

My mom has beaten Dead Space on easy mode. And she has just begun the game again in normal mode. I'm so proud. And glad she found a hobby that suits her and that we can talk about.

Some pretty interesting upcoming games were shown at E3 this year, besides the fact that there were a lot of buff white guys shooting at things games. Not that I don't like them, but I also like a bit of variety. Border House makes a great analysis of the conference numerous fails. Sadly, at this point, I don't think anybody would be surprised to know there are still a lot of sexism and racism in the video game industry.

Anyway. I'm particularly waiting for :

It's been some time since I've spent the evening dancing by the beach, under sunset light, drinking a cool beer (or several). It was wonderful. Everyone was very friendly. I've even spoken to Gari from the French band Oaïstar (I guess that nobody knows him, except for people from southern France, still, it was fun).

I'm done moving. It was exhausting, the keys are not returned yet and I've still got about a million things to do. I'm also behind in several of the TV shows that I watch. How sad is that.

But it's fine, I'm moving on and all that.

AND I CAN HARDLY WAIT FOR THIS :

HBO + fantasy + great casting? Is it spring 2011 already?

YES. It's going to be so beautiful. When your life suck, just play DS and appreciate the fact that you are not Isaac Clarke.
